Rabbi Yitzchak Abuhav (1433-1493) was one of the great Sephardic Gedolim during the era of the Spanish Expulsion and was thus renowned as “the last gaon of Castile”.

He is also called Rabbi Yitzchak Abuhav the II in order to distinguish him from his great-great-grandfather Rabbi Yitzchak Abuhav, author of Menoras Hamaor.

Rabbi Yitzchak Abuhav was the teacher and spiritual mentor of Rabbi Yaakov Beirav who taught the Beis Yosef, and the latter thus commonly refers to him as “Rabbeinu Hagadol”. During the year of the Spanish Expulsion, he journeyed to Portugal in order to prevail upon the king to allow settlement of the exiles on Portuguese soil; he was niftar there several months later.
