Laws of treifos with practical halachah and directives by Rabbi Dovid ben Yichya, based on the practices of Spain and Portugal.

This composition on the laws of treifos is one of the primary works on treifos, and its importance is evident from the Beis Yosef Yoreh Deah Ch. 39 which concerns laws of treifos. In this section the Beis Yosef cites Rabbi Dovid ben Yichay’s sefer over fifteen times.

Rabbi Dovid ben Yichya was one of the great sages of Lisbon, Portugal during the era of the expulsion. He corresponded extensively with Rabbi Eliyahu Mizrachi, the Re’em. When the Spanish exiles arrived en masse in Portugal, broken and destitute, he offered them great comfort and encouragement and personally supported them. Yet malicious parties reported him to King Johan II, purporting that he was encouraging Marranos (anusim) to return to their faith. Due to these accusations he was forced to flee his native land to Constantinople in Turkey. He also authored sefer Kav Venaki on Mishlei (Lisbon, 1490), Lashon Limudim (Constantinople, 1506) and others. He was the father of Rabbi Tam Ibn Yicha, author of Shu”t Ohalei Tam.
