Rabbi Michael Forshlager

Kuntress of Chiddushei Torah

Letter and handwritten pamphlet replete with chiddushei Torah by Rabbi Michael Forshlager, close disciple of the Avnei Nezer and author of Toras Michael. This pamphlet was not included in either his sefer Toras Michael or anthology of letters included in Michael B’Achas.
The first page of the kuntress is a letter to Rabbi Moshe Shmuel Shapiro, maggid shiur in Yeshivas Rabbi Chaim Berlin. The letter is followed by 28 sides of handwritten chiddushei Torah.
Rabbi Michael Forshlager (1884-1959) was a genius, a pious and devoted talmid and chassid of the Avnei Nezer who described him with: “He pulls the Tosfos and Rashba out of his sleeve”. During the Avnei Nezer’s final years, he relayed his teshuvos to Rabbi Michael for his perusal and review before mailing them.
Rabbi Michael discoursed in halachah with some of the greatest Torah luminaries of his times who occasionally visited Sochochov to bask in the holy court of the Avnei Nezer, among them Rabbi Yosef Engel and his rebbi the Chelkas Yoav.
In 1921, Rabbi Michael emigrated from Europe to the United States, and although he endeavored to remain out of the limelight, he quickly gained renown as one of the great scholars and sages in America. Rabbi Aharon Kotler, Rosh Yeshivah of Lakewood, expressed that “Rabbi Michael is the greatest gaon in all of America!” and in this correspondence with the Admor Rabbi Yoel of Satmar, the latter addressed him with great honor (see Shu”t Divrei Yoel Orach Chaim Ch. 8). Rabbi Michael Forshlager’s life story is presented at length in his sefer Michael B’Achas (New York, 2014).
