Sefer Hachinuch gifted to Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsh by his Father

Sefer Hachinuch by Rabbi Aharon Halevi of Barcelona.

On the flyleaf appears an autographed inscription by Rabbi Raphael Hirsch to his eldest son Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch.

“This gift is sent to my son Rabbi Samson…1839 Raphael Frankfurter.”

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsh served as rabbi of Oldenburg, North Germany at that time.

Rabbi Repahel Frankfurter Hirsh (1777-1857) was the son of Harav Menachem Mendel Frankfurter, Rosh Av Beis Din of Altona. He was a great scholar and renowned for his kindness, integrity and purity of spirit. He changed his surname to Hirsch after his grandfather Harav Hirsch Frankfurter.

His son Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch would sign his Hebrew language letters and responsa,
“Samson son of my beloved father Raphael Hirsch Frankfurter.” He likewise signed his German language writings
“Samson Raphael Hirsch, ” linking his name to his father’s for posterity.

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch wrote a dedication to his parents on the title page verso of Chorev expressing his eternal appreciation for them and beautifully summarizing the education that he absorbed in their home: “My guardians in the days of my childhood; my counselors in the days of my adolescence; my friends in the days of my adulthood.”
On that same page appears the stamp of Julius Hirsch, son of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch and author of a commentary on Sefer Yeshayahu.
