Isidor Kaufmann ( 1853 – 1921 )   Painter of Jewish themes, was an Austro-Hungarian painter best known for his realistic genre scenes of Chasidic figures in Eastern Europe. He sought to probe the spiritual depths of his subjects . His works were sought after by notable collectors and even the Emperor Franz Joseph prized himself with a ‘ Kauffman ‘ painting.

 The artist also received three medals of achievement to honor his paintings. Today, his works are in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, The Jewish Museum in New York, among others.

 Isidor Kaufmann, is considered the greatest Jewish painter of the 19th Century

PROVENANCE:

The present painting was acquired by Edmund Traub in Vienna in the early 1920s and displayed in his landmark estate the Villa Traub, Prague, until 1938.

After the Nazi occupation of Prague in 1938, Traub fled to London with his family, taking his art collection along with him, and settled in London.

The painting remained the property of Edmund Traub in Primrose Hill, London, until his passing in 1956.

The painting was passed to his daughter Anna Traub Strasmore of Maida Vale, London. Upon her death in 2000, the painting was inherited by her son Martin Strasmore of Weston, Conn.
Sold in Kestanboum and company New York , December , 2016.
