Lot : 6
Mishnayos from Daniel Bomberg’s Talmud.
Printed in the famous printing press of Daniel Bomberg, one of the most important printers of Hebrew books of all time, with thick, high-quality paper and strong, clear ink.
1. The first volume is
Seder Zeraim, with the commentaries of the Rambam and Rabbi Shimshon of Shantz.
This is the first edition of Rabbi Shimshon of Shantz’s fundamental commentary, which was printed in all future Shas editions in the margins of the Mishnayos Seder Zeraim.
2. The second volume is
Seder Kodshim, with the Rambam’s commentary on the Mishnah.
Venice, 1528. Page Count: 47 leaves. We chose this second Bomberg edition, as here Seder Kodshim was printed by Bomberg for the first time as a standalone unit with its own title page. In the 1521 edition, the Mishnayos of Kodshim were appended to the masechtos of Seder Kodshim without a separate title page.
3. The third volume is
Seder Taharos, with the Rambam’s commentary on the Mishnah.
At the end of Seder Zeraim appears a colophon stating: “We cultivated holy seeds, planted it, and produced praiseworthy fruit — all of Seder Zeraim of the Mishnayos of Rabbeinu Hakadosh, with the commentary of Rabbeinu Moshe ben Maimon, of blessed memory, and the commentary of Rabbeinu Shimshon of Shantz, Baal HaTosafos… and due to the scarcity of the commentary of Rabbeinu Shimshon, of blessed memory, we had at hand only a single copy, ” indicating that the printers possessed only one manuscript of Rabbeinu Shimshon’s commentary.
The first complete set of Talmud Bavli was printed by Daniel Bomberg in his famed printing house in Venice between the years 1520-1523. The complete set was a masterpiece, with attractive, clear type and practically free of censorship. It likewise contained new additions that were printed for the first time based on handwritten manuscripts. Following its great success, Bomberg reprinted the Talmud with certain changes between the years 1526 and 1531.
