Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Friedman of Liska (1798-1874) was renowned throughout Hungary as the “Tzaddik Rabbi Hershele Lisker”. One of the illustrious progenitors of Chassidus who was revered for the “Glory of his holiness and purity, ” as the Divrei Chaim of Sanz wrote in his approbation to Ach Pri Tevuah, he gained fame throughout Europe for the miracles and wonders that he performed for countless Jews who flocked to him for blessings.

Born in Ihel and raised in the home of the Yismach Moshe, Rav Hershele Lisker was a genius who was thoroughly versed in both the Revealed and Hidden Torah. Following the passing of the Yismach Moshe, thousands streamed to him for blessing and counsel. His prime disciple was the famous tzaddik and miracle-worker Rabbi Yeshaya’le of Kerestir who served his master faithfully for eleven years and only agreed to open his court after Rabbi Hershele’s passing. Until his last days, Rabbi Yeshaya’le of Kerestir would sign his name as “The Shamash of the holy Rav of Liska”.

Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Friedman’s legacy includes Ach Pri Tevuah and Hayashar V’hatov, his biography and stories and wonders of his life are recorded in Darkei Hayashar V’hatov .
