Marginalia of Rabbi Dovid Strauss of Frankfurt, Av Beis Din on Fürth, on Shulchan Aruch Yoreh De’ah, 1711.

Shulchan Aruch Yoreh De’ah with Shach and Taz with wide margins and dozens of long, handwritten marginalia by Harav Dovid Strauss, Av Beis Din of Fürth.

The owner’s autograph appears on the last page: “G-d has granted me this, Dovid Strauss, ” as well as on the title page [2] and on pages 4, 24. The margins of the pages of this Shulchan Aruch feature dozens of glosses and comments on the Shulchan Aruch, many of them long notes, by its venerable owner (one of the glosses in a different handwriting, is a quote from the Ab”d).

Harav Dovid Strauss was a renowned Torah scholar and teacher, albeit very few of his writings have survived. These marginalia are from the only known writings of his novellae to be extant today.

Harav Dovid Strauss of Frankfurt (1687-1762), Av Beis Din Fürth, was the Rosh Av Beis Din in Frankfurt and later in Worms before being appointed Rav and Rosh Yeshivah of the well-known yeshivah there. He contended with Harav Yehonasan Eibeschutz for the rabbinate in Fürth; since Harav Yehonasan was unable to leave his position in Metz, Rav Strauss was appointed Rabbi in Fürth. He was succeeded by Harav Yosef Steinhardt, author of Zichron Yosef.

Harav Dovid was one of the Torah luminaries of his generation and influenced all pivotal halachic decisions of that era such as the controversy between the printers in Amsterdam and Zoltsbach and the dispute over amulets. His disciples included revered personalities such as Harav Mendel Lilag of Frankfurt, rebbi of the Chasam Sofer; Harav Noach Chaim Tzvi Hirsch Berlin Av Beis Din of Fürth and author of Atzei Arazim; and Harav Meir Anschel Rothschild, patriarch of the well-known Rothschild family of Frankfurt.

The Chid”a, who met him during a visit to Fürth, referred to him thereafter as “Ish Elokim, ” and in his sefer Ein Zocher (Vol. 20, Ch. 3) he quotes a complex question that Rav Dovid asked him.

Numbering among the descendants of Rabbi David, are the glorious rabbinical Bamberger family, descendants of the Rabbi of Würzburg. (see: Nassi HaLeviim by Binyomin Shlomo Bamburger, at the end of the book "Kisvei Rabbi Yitzchak Dov Halevi from Würzburg", p. 502)
