Handwritten Letter by the Maharsham Rabbi Shalom Mordechai Hakohen
Schwadron. Brezhany, 1903

The present letter, replete with chiddushei Torah, was handwritten by the renowned genius Harav Shalom Mordechai Schwadron, Av Bein Din of Brezhany and author of Shu”t Maharsham.

The letter opens with the Maharsham’s apology that he is “Tired and weary, weakened and overwhelmed by the many distractions and plethora of letters regarding critical issues that overtake important issues…I cannot find a place of rest.”

Known as the Maharsham,
Harav Shalom Mordechai Hakohein Schwadron (1835 – 1911) was Av Beis Din of Brezhany and one of the greatest authors of halachic responsa in his era. He authored thousands of responsa with utmost clarity, which were published in his sefarim. The most complex and intricate halachic questions in the world were addressed to him, and he inevitably responded swiftly and clearly. When he was still a youth, the author of Sho’el U’meishiv regarded him as his future successor. The Sar Shalom of Belz even blessed him that his Torah study should not be relegated to a remote part of his mind, but that he could—and should—exploit it to the maximum. In 1882, he was crowned Rav of Brezan, where he served for 30 years until his passing in 1907.

Brezhany, 1903. Page size: 21×13 cm. Double-sided. Good condition.
