Responsa of Maharam Alashkar. First Edition. Sabbioneta, 1554

Halachic responsa by the great Sephardic sage Rabbi Moshe Alashkar who dwelled in the era of the Spanish Expulsion. Teshuvos Maharam Alashkar numbers among the fundamental works of the early Achronim.

Rabbi Moshe Alashkar (circa 1466 – 1546) was among the venerable Sephardic sages in the era of the Spanish Expulsion. He studied in Toledo with his famous contemporary Rabbi Yaakov ben Chaviv, author of the Ein Yaakov; and after the expulsion, wandered throughout Tunisia, Greece and Egypt before making his way finally to jerusalem. He corresponded extensively with the foremost sages of his generation among them the Re’em, Radvaz, Ralbach, Radach, Maharam Padua and others.

One of the most famous questions addressed in this sefer regards the hour of bein hashmashos, and whether we rule practically according to Rabbeinu Tam or the Geonim. His responsum is the best known source of the Geonim’s opinion, and anyone studying this issue references this sefer.

In Chapter 117, Maharam Alashkar strongly defends the Rambam’s Guide to the Perplexed, negating all the questions posed by Rabbi Shem Tov bar Rabbi Shem Tov in Sefer Ha’Emunos.

The last pages of this sefer feature prayers and poems.
