One of the most important responsa seforim!

Shu”t Maharik. First Edition. Venice, 1519

Responsa in halacha by Rabbeinu Yosef Colon, the Maharik.

The Maharik’s responsa is one of the fundamental works on halachah and basis of the Shulchan Aruch.

In his introduction to his great work, the Beis Yosef cites the Maharik along with the great Rishonim the Rashba, the Rosh, Ran and Rivash.

The Maharik is mentioned over 300 times in the Beis Yosef!

In the introduction to Darkei Moshe, the Rema writes, “The responsa of the Sages after whose words we are drawn…the Rosh, the Rashba, the Maharik and the Rivash…they are great lights that illuminate the eyes of the people.”

The Maharik (1410-1480) was the last of the Rishonim and the teacher of Rabbi Ovadia of Bartenura.

This copy of Shu”t Maharik contains handwritten hagaos by Harav David Yitzchaki (circa 1615-1694), son-in-law of the kabbalist Rabbi Avraham Azzulai author of Chessed L’Avraham and father of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchaki author of Zera Avraham. In his youth, he moved from Salonika to Chevron where he studied Torah by his future father-in-law, the Chessed L’Avraham. Rabbi David was the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem and his signature appears on many rulings and responsum. (See Shu”t Ginas Vradim Chut Hameshulash 5:9, 26, and Shu”t Zera Anashim 30.) The Mahari Chagiz called him, “The first of the first, the angel Rabbi David Yitzchaki” (Shu”t Hilchos Ketanos Vol. 1 Ch. 103). It is assumed that he died in 1694 and was buried near the tomb of the Pri Chadash.

One annotation is signed with his initials, ‘Daled Yud’, and a second one hints at his name as well with the words, “Udai b’zeh.” He mentions time he spent in Egypt in the first annotation.

On the page before title page is the stamp of the Admor Harav Alter Menachem of Borsa Hy”d (1897-1943) son of Harav Pinchas of Borsa, who was a son of Harav Baruch of Vizhnitz and father-in-law of Harav Yaakov Yosef of Spinka (Encyclopedia of Chassidus vol. 1, page 221).

Leaf [2a] stamp of his father-in-law Harav Dovid Mordechai Heschel from Shtefenesht of the Apta dynasty. After the Holocaust, he served as an Admor in the U.S.A., passed away in 1964 (ibid page 195).
