Handwritten, Autographed Halachic Teshuvah by Rabbi Yosef Leib Sofer, Av Beis Din of Paks. 1909

Lengthy, 4-sided handwritten and autographed teshuvah by Harav Yosef Leib Sofer, Av Beis Din of Paks and author of Yalkut Sofer. This teshuvah discusses an old practice of dividing the mitzvah of bris milah into two—with one person performing the actual circumcision and the other removing the foreskin— as well as discussion on having a gentile carry the baby to shul on Shabbos for his bris. In this teshuvah, Harav Yosef Lev references his father’s words in Sefer Hamakneh who quotes his grandfather Harav Yoel Unger, author of Shu”t Riv”a.

Harav Yosef Leib Sofer (1861-1918), Av Beis Din of Derecske and Paks, was the son, prime disciple and successor of his father Harav Eliezer Zussman Sofer and author of the Yalkut Eliezer. A genius, Torah scholar and talented author, he studied by the Shevet Sofer before being crowned Av Beis Din of Derecske. In 1903, he succeeded his father as Av Beis Din of Paks. His written legacy includes Likutei Sofer and Yalkut Sofer.
