Unknown Artistic Calendar. Bucharest, 1848.
Hebrew calendar for the year 5609 with calculations for the holidays, Rosh Chodesh, tekufos and molados. Contains facts about the sun’s orbit, the stars and constellations, as well as instructions on how to set the dates of the holidays and other basic rules of the Jewish calendar.
All the information is presented as a work of art, with a drawing of a large eagle in the center of the page, wheels, vases, and architectural pillars.
The calendar was created by Dov Beirish who was called Reb Leibish Degin of Brod. It was printed by Menachem Ezra Karnial of Lvov residing in Bucharest.
This is an unknown, unrecorded calendar, never catalogued by a bibliographer.
Before the discovery of this calendar there was no prior knowledge of Hebrew printing in Bucharest during that time period.
