Handwritten & Autographed Letter by the Baba Meir regarding the Hilula of Rabbi Amram ben Divon

on Lag Ba’omer

Moroccan Jews have a longstanding custom of visiting the burial site of the revered tzaddik Rabbi Amram ben Divon in Ouezzane, Morocco on the day of Lag B’omer.

In 1960, Lag Ba’omer fell on a motzaei Shabbos, and the Baba Meir feared that the planned festivities for the upcoming hilula would cause desecration of Shabbos. He thus dispatched this notice to Moroccan Jewry instructing them to postpone the hilula to Sunday night.

Rabbi Meir Abuchatzeira (1917-1983), fondly known to all as Baba Meir, was a
tzaddik, kabbalist, and miracle-worker. A scion of the illustrious Abuchatzeira dynasty, he was the long-awaited progeny of the saintly Baba Sali who waited ten years to be blessed with a child. From the day of his birth, his father pronounced that Rabbi Meir would devote his life exclusively to Torah, holiness, and purity, and indeed, he fulfilled his father’s dreams.Rabbi Meir received his first rabbinical ordination at a very young age. In 1945 he began serving as Rabbi of Midelt and in 1953 as Rabbi in Erfoud, both cities in Morocco. In 1965, the Baba Meir settled in Israel and passed away in Ashdod in 1983. He was succeeded by his son, Rabbi Elazar Abuchatzeira.
