Rabbi Wolf Heidenheim (1757-1832)
Rabbi Wolf Heidenheim was among the most famous masters of lashon hakodesh and dikduk and authored commentary on many piyyutim. He founded a publishing house in Rödelheim, which was then on the outskirts of Frankfurt, and published Chumashim, machzorim, siddurim and Haggados with translations, while painstakingly ensuring maximal accuracy and precision in printing.
Gedolei Yisrael across the board, among them the Chasam Sofer, commended Heidenheim’s efforts. The Chasam Sofer mentions Heidenheim on many occasions, and once wrote, “If not for him, piyyutim would have surely been forgotten and no longer recited in our generation” (Shu”t Chasam Sofer, Choshen Mishpat Ch. 79)
Jewish books printed by Heidenheim were known throughout Germany and beyond for its accuracy and precise printing.
