Letter by Harav Shneur Kotler & His Grandfather Harav Isser Zalman Meltzer Regarding Certificate for Harav Shneur’s Fiancée, A Refugee in Shanghai. Jerusalem, 1946.


In this letter, Harav Shneur Kotler requests to relay the long-awaited certificate from the Jewish Agency office in London to the British Consul in Shanghai.

In the margin, his grandfather Harav Isser Zalman Meltzer adds a note, “I thank you for your help regarding Richelle, and Hashem should help that the plan should come to fruition.”

In 1941, Harav Shneur Kotler, son of the Rosh Yeshivah of Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, Harav Aharon Kotler, was betrothed to Richelle daughter of Harav Aryeh Malkiel Friedman Hy”d. Their shadchan was Harav Elchanan Wasserman Hy”d. However, facing the looming threat of war, the chosson fled Lithuania to Erez Yisrael where he spent the next seven years studying with his illustrious grandfather Harav Isser Zalman Meltzer.

In the meanwhile, his fiancée Richelle fled to Shanghai, where following years of intensive efforts, she, among a group of Jewish refugees, received entry visas to the United States. Eight years after their engagement, the couple was wed in the Lakewood Yeshiva.
