Personal ID of Rabbi Yoel of Satmar Including Photo

Rare, personal identification document belonging to the Admor Rabbi Yoel of Satmar.

The ID states the Admor’s date of birth, address and other information and includes a photo of the Admor as well. This ID was used by him each time he left his home. The document bears the official signature of the Hungarian government.
Background: In the wake of the ‘Second Vienna Award, ’ the city of Satmar was returned to the Hungarian government. Hungary imposed new decrees upon the Jews, one of which required them to carry official identification at all times. Those who failed to comply faced risk of deportation. This decree had no reasonable grounds other than to embitter the lives of the Jews, many of whom were forced to remain secluded in their homes as obtaining these documents was made purposely difficult. The decree aroused a Halachic question as well with regard to whether or not it was permitted to carry this document on Shabbos.
This is the personal ID that the Admor Rabbi Yoel of Satmar used during this time.
