Lurianic Kabbalah Manuscript: Five Handwritten Treatises Containing Teachings from the Ariza”l and Rabbi Chaim Vital; Germany, circa 1700

Impressive volume containing handwritten treatises from the Arizal and his disciple, the great Kabbalists Rabbi Chaim Vital, the Rema of Pano and the Remaz. 

Germany, circa 1700, the manuscript is handwritten in neat, rounded Ashkenazic script and includes handwritten marginal comments and additions.

The five treatises included are:

1) Pri Eitz Chaim: Kabbalistic treatise by Rabbi Chaim Vital on the positive and negative commandments

2) Igeres HaRemaz LeRabbanei Krakow: Kabbalistic treatise regarding writing sifrei Torah, mezuzos and megillos.

3) Nof Eitz Chaim – Part Two: Kabbalistic commentary by Rabbi Chaim Vital regarding several verses in the Torah and several maamarei chazal. This treatise was edited by Maharam Papirash and was published under the title ‘Sefer Likutei Torah.’

4) Nof Eitz Chaim – Part 3: Kabbalistic commentary by Rabbi Chaim Vital including explanations from the Arizal on several Aggados found in Talmud. This third volume of Nof Eitz Chaim has never been brought to print.

5) Kan Tzipor: Summary of sefer Kanfei Yona authored by Rabbi Menachem of Pano. This sefer, too, has never been brought to print.

Many pages in the manuscript include numerous textual changes and additions as well as several comments that were clearly written by a scholarly man.

Background: This manuscript originally belonged to the Beis Midrash of the renowned philanthropist, Rabbi Daniel Yaffe of Berlin. Rabbi Daniel Yaffe of Berlin. Great sages, such as Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Riminov and the Pri Megadim studied in this very Beis Midrash.

In his introduction to his sefer, the Pri Megadim writes: “Credit to the famous philanthropist… Rabbi Daniel Yaffe of Berlin, for it is because he volunteered… and sustains Torah scholars in his Beis Midrash… I have also established my place here in his Beis Midrash where I found a place full of sefarim …”
