Words of Guidance for the Foundation of Orthodox Communities from Rabbi Yaakov Leibowitz, Av Beis Din of Kapisch
"
Every town or village that in the name of Israel shall be titled Orthodox, is obligated to bow its head under the Shulchan Aruch… and all of the communities’ behaviors must be under the direction of the rabbi…"
These are some of the guiding words written by Rabbi Yaakov Leibowitz of Kapisch to the echelons of the Subotica and Zagreb communities in Yugoslavia.
He concludes his letter with the promise that if they follow his instructions regarding their schools and learning, "
we can hope that Yugoslavia will continue to illuminate in the light of Judaism."
Rabbi Yaakov Leibowitz of Kapisch was a disciple of Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov Yukel Teitlebaum (son-in-law of the Yetev Lev). He served as rabbi of Kapisch and later immigrated to the United States, settling in Brooklyn where he was known as one of America’s greatest educators. He was also a great resource for the Hungarian and Polish leadership. He was the father in law of Rabbi Aharon Gad, a prominent
tzaddik of Williamsburg who passed away recently. He also served as the president of the His’achdus Harabbanim and authored Responsa Mishneh Yaakov; Five vol.
