The Vilna Gaon’s Customs

The customs, rites, practices, and special prayers of the Vilna Gaon.
Edited and compiled by Rabbi Yissachar Ber ben Rabbi Tanchum of Vilna.
Beautiful copy complete with both title pages.

Sefer Maaseh Rav has been accepted as the most reliable source for the customs of the Vilna Gaon. The Torah sages of the following generations studied this sefer in depth in order to clarify the Vilna Gaon’s customs, and the Chafetz Chaim cites most of the customs that relate to Orach Chaim in the Mishnah Berurah.
 Written by
Rabbi Yissachar Ber ben Rabbi Tanchum of Vilna
(1779-1855) who was one of Vilna’s great dayanim and the spiritual leader of “The Gr”a’s Kloiz”. He compiled Maaseh Rav based on what he witnessed firsthand in the Vilna Gaon’s Beis Medrash, as well as on the writings of his disciples Rabbi Sa’adya ben Rabbi Nosson Neta and Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Shklov.

This first edition was published anonymously.
A letter by Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin appears at the beginning of the sefer, as do approbations of the Chayei Adam and Rabbi Avel Posvillier, Av Beis Din of Vilna.
