Haggadah

with Map of Eretz Yisrael

Amsterdam, 1781

Wide margins and beautiful copy!

Pesach Haggadah following the customs of Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jewry includes a map of Eretz Yisrael and copper-engraved illustrations.

Unusual copy and original decorated binding.

This copy is larger than the standard format. The sefer is in its original ornate leather binding which features a gilded border and special engravings, among them two angels carrying a crown.

Beautiful copperplate illustrations accompany the Haggadah story, along with decorated initials opening the paragraphs.

Map of Eretz Yisrael includes description of Bnei Yisrael’s wanderings in the Wilderness. The map was drawn by the convert Avraham ben Yaakov.

Avraham ben Yaakov Hager was a righteous convert who filled an important role in the design and illustration of Jewish books. Formerly a Christian preacher in the Rhineland, he made his way to Amsterdam where he ultimately converted to Judaism. For twenty-five years, he toiled in Amsterdam to create breathtaking copperplate designs for numerous sefarim, although his most famous of all is undoubtedly the map he drew to complement the Amsterdam Haggadah.

Haggadah Maale Beis Chorin Includes commentary by the Alshich, Gevuros Hashem by the Maharal of Prague and Olelos Efraim by the Kli Yakar, as well as a commentary on the piyutim ‘Az rov nissim’ and ‘Ometz gevurosecha’ (which are erroneously attributed to the Abarbanel), and a commentary on ‘Chad Gadya’ by the Matteh Aharon. Also included are laws and instruction in Ladino and Yiddish in large, clear font.

First time with the title “Maaleh Beis Chorin”.
