Chumash Toras HaElokim. Philadelphia, 1845-6

The original English Jewish translation of the Torah!
Spectacular, preserved set!

Chamishah Chumshei Torah and Haftaros with English translation by Yitzchak (Isaac) ben Uri ben Eliezer Leeser.

This collector’s 5-volume set of Chamishah Chumshei Torah presents the Hebrew text of the Torah and its English translation on facing sides of the page.

The set was well-preserved and all volumes are in good condition, bound in matching green leather bindings with gilded engravings and edges.

Isaac Leeser was the first Jew to translate the Torah into English without relying on previous  translations of the Old Testament by gentiles. Instead he toiled to translate the Torah from its original
lashon hakodesh into English, on behalf of American Jewry. His translation of the Chumash had a major impact on the future of Orthodox Jews in the United States.

Rabbi
Isaac Leeser (1806-1868) emigrated from his native Germany to the United States where he served for many years as a rabbi of Congregation Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia. Leeser was a vehement opponent of secularization and abided strictly by halachah.
