First Sefer Printed in Jerusalem!

Avodas Hakodesh
by the Chida
Jerusalem, 1841
___

Sefer Avodas Hakodesh by the Chida, Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azzulai. This sefer includes seven separate essays on halachah, customs, mussar, teshuvah, prayers and segulos. Theyare titled: Moreh B’etzba, Tziporen Shamir, Kesher Gadol, Kaf Achas, Yosef B’seder, Sonson L’Yair and Shomer Yisrael.

This is one of the most important anthologies of the Chida’s sefarim, and many of the prayers instituted into our regular prayers were first written by the Chida in these sefarim.

The preface to this anthology features a historical introduction by the first Jerusalem printer Rabbi Yisrael Beck in which he tells of his journey ascending to Eretz Yisroel, the establishment of his press in Tzfas, and its closure in the wake of the Syrian Peasant Revolt. He also recounts his journey to Alexandria to appeal to the authorities regarding the return of stolen Jewish property, the Damascus Affair, and mainly of the reestablishment of his printing house in Jerusalem.
