Year-Round Machzor

Shapira Press

Zhitomir, 1858

Rare Edition

Machzor for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and the Three Festivals – Pesach, Sukkot, Shavuot in accordance to the custom practiced in Poland, Bohemia, and Russia, printed by Rabbi Chanina Lipa and Rabbi Yehoshua Heschel Shapira, grandsons of the famed Slavita Rav.

Nice copy with wide impressive margins.

Rare unknown edition; The National Hebrew Bibliography or Winograd do not list this edition of the Machzor, and likewise no copy of this Machzor exists in the National Library of Jerusalem.
Unlike the more familiar edition of the Machzor printed in that year, which is larger and has a Yiddish commentary (see Genazym Catalog 4 #63), the present unknown edition is smaller and without commentary.

Tefillas Tal which is recited on Pesach contains illustrations of the twelve constellations.

The machzor opens with 2 title pages. On the second title page, the text is more detailed.

Shapira Press

Sefarim printed by the legendary Shapira family, grandsons of the saintly Admor Rabbi Pinchas of Koritz, were sought after by tzaddikim and chassidim of their generation. Many specifically wished to pray only from the siddurim and machzorim printed by the Shapira press, as they held their holiness and purity in high regard.

“Therefore, one should strive to purchase sefarim printed by G-d-fearing men, and especially from the Slavita and Zhitomir Presses [owned] by the Admor of Koritz’s grandchildren, who were exalted printers.” (Taharas Hakodesh Ch. 6 by the Shomer Emunim)

Zhitomir, 1858. Two title pages, 182 leaves. Page size: 21.6 cm with large 4 cm bottom margin! Good condition.

Half-cloth binding with marbleized paper.
