Letter of Chidushi Torah by Rabbi Yitzchak Weiss, Av Beis Din of Vrbové. 1938

Handwritten and autographed letter by Rabbi Yitzchak Weiss of Vrbové Hy”d, author of Shu”t Siach Yitzchak and brother of Rabbi Sheftel Weiss of Shimano. The letter is addressed to Rabbi Chaim Reuven Klein, Av Beis Din of Sanina and son-in-law of the famous Rabbi Yeshaya’le of Kerestir.

Rabbi Yitzchak Weiss Hy”d (1873-1942), Av Beis Din of Vrbové, was one of the leading Hungarian sages in the pre-Holocaust era. He was thoroughly-versed in the Revealed and Hidden Torah, and in his youth, the Shevet Sofer would refer to him as “My Library” attesting to his disciple’s supreme knowledge and breadth in Torah.

The Minchas Elazar of Munkacz once remarked to a disciple of Rabbi Yitzchak Weiss:
“Know that your master is one of the 36 tzaddikim upon whom the generation stands…”

In 1903, Rabbi Yitzchak Weiss was appointed Av Beis Din of Carlsberg, and in 1906, Rav of Vrbové. His famous works include Avnei Beis Hayotzer and Shu”t Siach Yitzchak. He perished al kiddush Hashem in the Lublin area on 26 Tammuz, 5702 (1942).
Vrbové, 1938. Page size: 22×14 cm. Written on both sides (4 lines on verso). Small tear on bottom right, with one letter missing. Provenance: Public Auction  .To the best of our knowledge, it is not printed in his teshuvos Siach Yitzchak.
With the Nazis’ entry into Vrbové, Rabbi Yitzchak Weiss was carted away toward the Lublin region. At one station, all prisoners were ordered to disembark and transfer to a second train. Rabbi Yitzchak held a briefcase containing his precious manuscripts, and as he alighted from the first train, the briefcase opened and his writings scattered. When he knelt to collect them, the Nazis began beating him ruthlessly.
Turning to his fellow Jews, he beseeched, “Kinderlach, dervaremt zich! Lozt druken meine ksavim! =  Dear Jewish children! Please have mercy on me and print my writings!”
