Harav Moshe Feinstein’s Groundbreaking Responsa Regarding Opening Canned Goods & Closed Packages on Shabbos

Lengthy, 21-page halachic responsa, handwritten and autographed by Hagaon Harav Moshe Feinstein.

Long halachic pamphlet and responsa regarding opening closed packages and canned goods on Shabbos. The responsa was written and signed by Hagaon Harav Moshe Feinstein, Posek Hador of the previous generation and author of Iggros Moshe.
In the query, he describes several instances including tearing open a sack that was sewn closed; tearing a paper bag (such as sugar); opening a can of sardines as well as opening  other canned goods.

Rav Moshe’s writings on this subject are comprehensive and serve as the foundations for all later discussions of the topic. Rabbanim and Poskim in the past generation who discussed the subject of opening packages and cans on Shabbos cite this responsa from the Iggros Moshe, and his ruling is universally accepted by congregations around the world.
Hagaon Harav Moshe Feinstein (1895-1986) was regarded as the leading 20th century halachic authority in the United States. Harav Aharon Kotler once stated: “The halachah is [as he says] always. If the Posek Hador states that the halachah is such, then we are bound to heed his words.” On many occasions, venerable Rabbanim referred complex questions to Rav Moshe, expressing “Only Rav Moshe has shoulders broad enough to rule upon such issues.”

This responsa was printed in Iggros Moshe Vol. 1 Orach Chaim Ch. 122).

21 handwritten pages inscribed on the verso of Harav Moshe Feinstein’s personal stationery.
